Dojo Cup Challenge – 3 August

Solis Ortus competitors entered for the dojo cup challenge to improve their skills and obtain valuable tatami time. The Dojo Cup Challange was hosted by Sensei Takis and held at Curro Serengeti.

Every tournament is a learning curve where some try out new techniques, others improve their existing talent and some try out the tournament scene.  Every students walk away a learner and some adds a medal to collection.  One of our students informed me prior to his fight that today is the day he will try a few kicks.  Low and behold he scored with a beautiful executed kick.  I don’t know who was prouder, me or him.

It is such a pleasure witnessing the Solis Ortus parents blend and becoming a karate family.  Everybody rooting and encouraging each Solis Ortus competitor.  So blessed to have these families in our dojo.

It is a greater pleasure to witness the friendships and bonds forged between the karatekas and how they grow into their own.

Great talent at Solis Ortus.

Parents and Kids Theme 2019

Parent and kids training together

With life’s fast pace and demanding deadlines, spending quality time with our kids is a luxury these days.

For this reason Solis Ortus has a kids and parent evening once a year.

A picture tells a thousand words. Our parents tried everything with a smile. They found new respects for their karatekas and now know how hard their child(ren) works in the dojo.

Solis Ortus parents are OSS-some. Thank you for making quality time for your children and making ever lasting memories.

Solis Ortus Grading – 1 June 2019

Solis Ortus Grading – 1 June 2019.

On 1 June 2019 Solis Ortus had its first grading for 2019.

From mid-March 2019, we started preparing all the students for this grading. This year Solis Ortus had a record of 10 senior (30 years and older) white belts grading to Yellow. It is amazing to see so many grown-ups – most of whom are our younger karateka’s moms and dads – enjoying the art of karate and claiming back their health! To all the students who had to endure tough classes, instructors being hard on them, family or personal obstacles, the cold and flu and various tummy bugs, – YOU HAVE MADE IT!!

Every karateka with his or her new belt shows us all, and yourself, that you can do it. You can do anything if you really want it. Hard work has never been bad for anybody. Your success proves that your minds are in the right place, and that your parents, grandparents, step-parents and anyone else in your life are doing an amazing job in raising you all.

The Solis Ortus Instructors are so proud of each and every karateka! We wish you all the best of luck for the rest of your karate journey.

Now we can start playing again, having fun while keeping fit and training our body and minds.

SA JKA Nationals 2019

Congratulations on making the Gauteng team and keeping the Solis Ortus name high! Was once again a major success for Solis Ortus Students.

The Gauteng team included 78 Solis Ortus Students. They represented our Province on 24 & 25 May 2019 at the SA JKA Nationals event held at the Standard Bank Sports Arena in Johannesburg. The team was assisted by four Solis Ortus coaches – Veronica Myburg, Beatrix Lötter-Moolman, Johan de Witt and Ruan van der Westhuizen.

On Friday, 24 May 2019 the day started early with our junior White to Purple belt competitors, who already arrived at 06h30. They collected their tags and took their places with the rest of the Gauteng team. The march-on was magnificent. Gauteng rolled in on like a blue tsunami. The vibe was infectious! The tournament officially kicked off at 8h00 and the fun and games started. Two of our senior karateka – Sandy Oosthuizen and Marx van Eeden – officiated at the tables.

We were back for more on Saturday, 25 May 2019 when it was our senior Red to Black belts’ turn to enter the arena with tight nerves and high hopes. The top four in each division were chosen for the SA team that will travel to Germany at the end of year to prepare for the 15th Gichin Funakoshi Cup in 2020, which will be held in Japan.

Although not all Solis Ortus students received medals on the day, our karateka luckily know that no one is ever a loser: without a medal you become a learner!

From Solis Ortus’ side we want to thank all the parents, students, coaches, instructors and officials for your time, effort, energy, dedication and support leading up the SA JKA Nationals. It is a pleasure working with a positive team. Our students, from the youngest to the eldest, are absolutely awesome. You worked so hard, and hard work never goes unnoticed. If it was not your time to shine – never give up!

18 May 2019 SAJKA Pre-grading, National Gradings and International Qualifications

18 May 2019 SAJKA Pre-grading, National Gradings and International Qualifications

Senior Solis Ortus karateka have been preparing over several months for their Shodan and Nidan gradings. Some will attempt grading in October 2019, whilst others will have their opportunity in 2020. However, most of them attended the three hour pre-grading session at JKA HQ at th Wanderers in Jo’burg, as additional preparation for their Dan gradings.

Veronica Myburgh was the only senior karateka who attended the pre-grading as warm up for her Shodan grading on the same day. Veronica has walked a very long and sometimes painful road to grade to her first Dan. She attempted her Shodan 19 years ago, but unfortunately did not make it. Veronica though never forgot her true karate spirit and after life happened (work, marriage, children), she returned to the dojo again to work towards her Shodan dream. Sprained ankles, broken ribs and a low immune system never stopped Veronica from preparing well, training hard, learning non-stop and always bettering herself to such a point that she received her Shodan on 18 May 2019.

Congratulations Veronica on receiving your Shodan. Solis Ortus is tremendously proud of you. Enjoy this moment and wear your black belt with pride!

To all those continuing with their Dan preparations, work hard and never give up!

World Karate Federation Chief Referee presented the course and seminar, followed by a hour long exam to qualify as Region 5 Coach for kata and kumite. Sensei Eugene received the highest results, both for Kata and Kumite! Well done, Sensei! This is why Solis Ortus is one of the best karate dojos!

South Africa won the tournament, taking 31 gold, 25 silver and 21 bronze medals under Sensei Eugene’s coaching! From Solis Ortus’ and Sensei Eugene’s side – a big thank you to KSA for providing this opportunity to South African karateka, coaches and referees. Also, a big thank you to the organisers. Arnold Classic Event 2019

Arnold Classic Event 2019 at the Sandton Convention Centre

The Arnold Classic Africa event is an annual event that exhibits

different sports, including the main body building event and karate. Ten of our Solis Ortus athletes again competed in the All Styles karateka events from Friday 17 to Sunday 19 May. A highlight was when Arnold Schwarzenegger himself came to watch karateka doing their stuff.

On Friday, the athletes weighed in and participated in the Kata eliminations. Kumite eliminations took place on Saturday. Those that qualified competed on Sunday in the Finals for both Kata and Kumite.

Solis Ortus took eight medals! Well done to Ethan Brazelle (Finals, silver), Pieter Jordaan (bronze), Elmien Viljoen (Finals, gold), Thirq du Preez (Finals, gold), PW Pentz (Finals, gold), Hannelore Constable (Finals u21 and seniors, silver for both) and Savannah Hauser (bronze). Tiaan Uys received 5th place and John-Henry du Toit unfortunately fell out. Drian du Toit was injured and rushed to hospital, but was thankfully discharged later on Sunday.

As always, our Solis Ortus karateka showed how karate should be done – with spirit, discipline, humility and respect! Well done everyone, we are proud!

KSA Bloemfontein League 2019

KSA League at Bloemfontein, Tempe Indoor sport Centre, 12, 13 and 14 April 2019.

Over the weekend, Solis Ortus karateka represented Gauteng at the KSA League in Bloemfontein.  As always, our athletes made sure we enjoyed some nail biting action!

Our students arrived in Bloem on Friday for the weigh in.  Because of their dedication to the sport everybody weighed into their respective categories without needing to lose or gain weight in a short period of time.

As with all KSA Events, the competition was fierce and our students all brought their A-game.  It was an absolute pleasure seeing you all do your best on the tatami.  We know very well how exhausting the travelling is, yet you were all energetic and positive in your respective divisions.

For the time that our students are on the tatami, we rally behind them and cheer them on like the champions they are.  Our youngsters showed us that their extra competition class trainings and dedication allows them to reap the benefits of their hard work.  We kicked of the day with Gold and it was the first of many to come!

On Sunday, just before lunch time, the organisers of the tournament brought it all to a halt to make some important announcements.  We are pleased to share the wonderful news, that after many years of hard work and dedication to all karatekas (not just Solis Ortus students), our Sensei Eugene Oosthuizen was chosen as a coach for the senior South African karate team!

We are tremendously proud of our Sensei and honoured to have him, his knowledge and his dedication for our own selfish taking!

Congratulations to all medal winners, as well as to all those who did not medal, but gained valuable experience!

Always a pleasure to share in all emotions with our parents and competitors.  The Solis Ortus family bond is strong and true!

Solis Ortus at Dragon’s Challenge

On Saturday, 6 April 2019 Solis Ortus karateka supported Sensei Michelle Singh at her annual Dragon’s Challenge. The tournament was held at the Mandeville Sports Centre in Johannesburg and provided an interesting change in seating arrangements.

The Solis Ortus team and supporters (also known as parents) arrived in high spirits and occupied the first floor with chairs, blankets, pillows and karate gear all over. To say the least, we made ourselves at home and owned the place.

All Solis Ortus competitors had an awesome tournament and made their time count on the tatami. Katas were strong and the kumite was fierce. The whole team rallied behind each other. Everyone had an exhilarating day.

The tournament ended with the highlight fights of the day – the team event for the Dragon’s Cup. Our Solis Ortus team was ready that consisted of age divisions 9 to 16. The Kumite Team fought their hearts out with some nail biting moments, when they executed the most incredible take downs and ura-mawashis! We took the Dragon’s Cup home, which will be shared by each Solis Ortus team member during the year.

Thank you Solis Ortus karateka and supporters for making every tournament a memorable one.

Solis Ortus shines at KSA Nationals Elite Event

Solis Ortus shines at KSA Nationals Elite Event

The past weekend seven Solis Ortus karateka competed at the KSA Nationals Elite held in Cape Town. We took five medals – an exceptional achievement at an elite event such as this!

The event kicked off on Friday with a coaching course attended by Sensei Eugene, an exam and the weigh-in of competitors. On Saturday the competition started with all karetaka up to 11 years, but due to load shedding some divisions could only compete on Sunday.

Solis Ortus athletes who competed on Saturday were Isabel Esterhuizen and Ethan Brazelle in the 8-9 years division. Pieter Jordaan also started in the 10-11 year division on Saturday, but was shifted to Sunday, thanks to Eskom! Yet, all three still took bronze medals – well done guys and girl!

On Sunday, another four Solis Ortus chaps competed: Thirq du Preez and John-Henry du Toit in the 12-13 years division, PW Pentz in the 14-15 division and Drian du Toit in the 16-17 division. Competition was tough, but both Thirq and PW walked away with gold!

As always, Sensei Eugene and the whole of Solis Ortus are extremely proud of all our karateka!

Keep it up!

JKA GAUTENG 15 & 16 March 2019

Solis Ortus students attended extra training on Friday afternoons to sharpen their karate skills and technique to prepare for JKA Gauteng. This tournament was held over two days and our youngsters who participated on the Friday were all too happy to miss the last day of school.

On Friday, Solis Ortus had a total of 145 entries!!! The day started off with our young white, yellow and orange belts. Some students competed for the first time, showing immense control over their emotions and their ability to shine was super nova bright. The Solis Ortus parents made sure that the karatekas were at the hall in time; everybody was relaxed and ready to do what they trained for. The whole Solis Ortus family sat together and helped to get everybody ready. It so great to see how we rally behind our students, it gives you a sense of pride and a sense of belonging. To all the students who participated on Friday – Well done guys. You were absolutely awesome!!!! We hope you continue working for what you want to achieve!!

On Saturday, Solis Ortus seniors were part of 36 entries. Competition was tough and the divisions were strong. Some of our Seniors medalled, others qualified for Nationals and a few obtained the experience needed to grow and better themselves.

A huge thank you to Annschen van Zyl (Mother of Brown belt Winette van Zyl), Andre Myburgh (Father of mini Adriaan Myburgh and orange belt Anica Myburgh) and Ruan van der Westhuizen (father to white belt Yanika van der Westhuizen and Yellow Juan van der Westhuizen) who assisted as Managers for the Solis Ortus team. Without your assistance it would be a near impossible mammoth task to get our students to the floor, keep them calm and collected. To Veronica Myburgh (main Coach), Beatrix Lotter-Moolman, Johan de Wit, Savannah Hauser and Winette Van Zyl, thank you for coaching the Solis Ortus Team, for being the familiar face next to the floor and offering the necessary motivational words when needed. Your time and assistance is appreciated beyond measure.

Now we start preparations for Nationals.

Solis Ortus Specialist Training and GKF Training Session

Solis Ortus is privileged to not only have wonderful students, but also great parents. Robbie Brazelle, former Cheetah Rugby Team conditioning coach and dad of one of our young Yellow belt karateka. Robbie offered his time and skills during a training session at the Menlyn dojo for all our All Styles karateka and parents on Saturday 9 March from 07h00 to 08h30, hosted by Sensei Eugene.

The training session focused on strengthening the feet and ankles to improve agility and direction changes. If Robbie’s advice is applied and our athletes use the exercises shown to warm up, strengthen and condition the ankles before competitions their performance can improve from 2% to 5%.

Thank you Robbie, from everyone who attended!

Later the same day, Sensei Eugene presented a GKF Coaching Seminar in Boksburg. He also coaches the GKF Team that will compete on Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 March in Cape Town. This team includes several of Solis Ortus karateka.

Sensei Eugene’s aim with the seminar was aimed at building team spirit amongst the GKF Squad, preparing the athletes and getting them to know each other and their Coaches before the weekend’s event. As he said: good preparation is the key to unlock your true potential!

This session was a great success. With proper training, great spirit, excellent focus and good discipline, you cannot loose. Keep it up, Solis Ortus!

Gauteng Karate Federation Championship 2019

GKF Championships – Friday 8 February and Saturday 9 February 2019.

The program started at 11:00 on Friday morning and by 19:00 that evening we were all done.  The day was filled with katas from various styles and kumite divisions for 8 to 9 year olds, Veterans and Masters.  The whole day was very laid back, as the majority of the competitors were reserving their energy for Saturday.  Solis Ortus karateka sparkled like diamonds.  Some landed in huge divisions, but still did their absolute best.  Our students never faltered and did exactly as they practiced.

Saturday morning kicked-off at 9:00 with the hall abuzz with energy as male and female, young and old kareteka, geared up for the kumite day to make their mark as the best fighters in Gauteng.  The Children category (age 7 to 13)   inspired us with their tenacity and ability to overcome the “newness” of the compulsory protective gear they had to wear.  Our Solis Ortus students were on fire: they were fast and fierce, keeping the adrenaline coursing through the crowd.  It was an absolute pleasure cheering for Solis Ortus.

All and all, 15 Solis Ortus kareteka competed at the GKF Championships, taking 12 medals in total: 3 Bronze, 3 Silver, and 6 Gold!  What an awesome achievement for all who competed, even those that did not medal.  Any time spent on the tatami is invaluable, as each time provides a new experience.

SAs will take place in Cape Town on 15 and 16 March for all children, and on 1 and 2 March in Durban for all Seniors. We wish all those who qualified only the best.  Train hard and believe in your own abilities.  Be awesome! (OSS-some)

SAJKA Standardisation Seminar – 2 February 2019

On Saturday, 2 February 2019, 233 black belts from across South Africa gathered for the annual SA JKA Standardisation Seminar.

Sensei Eugene pre-registered eight of his seniors in the week prior to the seminar.  Thank goodness, because that meant we did not have to be there at 07h00 for registration.

Sensei Johan le Grange, our chief instructor, opened the seminar at 09h00 with a group session for all attendees.  This session was fast paced, and I, for one, was completely out of my comfort zone.  But, I tried…and failed…and then I tried again.  The hall was abuzz with energy!  Sensei Johan explained that our hands, feet, arms and legs are our weapons: if you cannot effectively use your weapons, then why do you have them.  TING!!!!!  Lightbulb moment or me.

At 9:45 the dojo heads moved to a different hall, which gave us a little bit more space to train in.

The 10:00 slot was taken by Marina Valassopoulos , who grilled us on the technicalities of Empi kata.  Correct body posture, deep zenkutsu dachi and speed was practiced over and over and over, until our legs were weak and wobbly .  But, our spirits were anything but weak and wobbly, because we thrived on the new knowledge passed on.

After Sensei Marina , Sensei Jon Williams taught us how to make Kanku Dai kata your own.  As everyone knows, Kanku Dai has 65 moves .  Although we all understand the technicality and execution of the moves , Sensei Jon asked us to make this Kata our own: to make any kata, for that matter, your own.  Put your personality into a kata, demand attention, while being mindful of speed and technical execution.

By now we were sweating! Everybody had the look of “I’ve just been licked by a happy, drooling bull mastiff”.  Our seniors (above 50 years) kept up the pace, inspiring us all.

The 11:15 timeslot was taken up by Sensei Charles Beckenstrater Who taught us the art of Geri Waza.  We were paired with a partner and taught how to properly position feet with different kicks and execute the kicks effectively with your hips.  First sequence was Mae Geri-Kekomi Geri where the aim is to push your partner and kick right through him or her.  Pressure, execution, fast thinking (if you are on the receiving end of a killing kick).

Afterwards, Sensei Chris Seabelo broke down Tekki Nidan for us.  He taught the bunkai of parts of the kata, affording us the opportunity to practice the various applications on our partners.  At first, we were confused and went slowly.  But, as we got the hang of it you just saw bodies flying and falling on the ground.  It was great fun to do a kata and execute the bunkai effectively.

The SA JKA Karate Assciation held its annual Standardisation Seminar and AGM on Saturday 2 February at The Wanderers Club. 233 SA JKA black belts attended the training.

Posted by SA JKA Karate Association on Sunday, February 3, 2019

LUNCH – time to refuel very tired and drained bodies.

From 13:30 – 14:30 we were treated with a presentation by a Neurologist, who lost his leg in a terrible accident.  He explained to us how to use your mind set (observation) to change the outcome of your faith.  He also explained the science behind moving and thinking and training your brain to do what needs to be done.

Senseis Daniel Gombe and Gert van Niekerk took the final hour, working hard on our stances.  Sensei Gert combined stances, slow then fast.  Then, after one had mastered the sequence, you got to practice against a partner, including some take downs.  Again, you just saw legs in the air as partners went flying and falling all over the place.  But as soon we landed, we got up, switched and continued with the sequence.

This was a great way to end an awesome  six-hour training session.

As a black belt you will know that you never ever stop learning and, for this reason, we know that karate is a sport for life.

Solis Ortus Open Day 2019

Solis Ortis Karate hosted yet another very successful Open Day on 19 January 2019. Sensei Eugene Oosthuizen welcomed more than 80 potential new karateka and parents with a brief history of the dojo, now in its 41st year.

The day kicked off with a demonstration by Sensei Eugene and his Black Belts. These senior karateka demonstrated Tekki Shodan kata, juyi ippon kumite (semi free fighting) and a bought of dojo-style free fighting. The audience was in absolute awe, judging by the oohs! and aahs! that could be heard.

The Black Belts were followed by Sensei Sandy Oosthuizen’s minis. These are little karateka range from ages two-and-a-half to five years. The mini class focuses on fundamental movement skills and aims to develop gross motor skills. These skills are very important not only to excel in karata, but also to develop other sports as well as concentration.

The minis were followed by the coloured belt classes starting from white belts up. Sensei Eugene explained the Five Maxims, which all Solis Ortus karateka try to follow. The Maxims as explained by Sensei Eugene are:

  • Character – karate is perfect to build a person’s character. One must be develop humility in victory and grace in defeat.
  • Etiquette – there is a certain etiquette in karate, and especially at Solis Ortus. Etiquette teaches respect, towards yourself as well as others.
  • Sincerity – one’s actions must always be sincere. Karate therefore requires a person to always act honestly.
  • Perseverance – karate is hard, and Solis Ortus trains very hard. This teaches karateka to not only persevere in their karate career, but also that daily life, from school and exams through to work, family and friendships, requires dedication and effort. Always endeavour to be the best you can be.
  • Self-control – karate requires self-control. Self-control requires discipline in everything one does.

The highlight of the Open Day was when Sensei Eugene invited all the potential new karateka onto the tatami for a round of practice. Everyone was awarded with a crisp, brand new white belt to start their karate life.

Solis Ortus looks forward to welcoming everyone that attended to the formal classes, as well as anyone else who is interested.

Open day 2019

Solis Ortus will have its OPENDAY on Saturday, 19 January 2019. We envision this event to be as inspirational as 2018 and stand proud how we projects karate as a life sport but also as a lifestyle. Solis Ortus is a well-known, proud karate club with a rich history. We have celebrated our 40th birthday in 2018 and have accomplished our 80th successful grading on 1 December 2018.

It is amazing to see how our parents’ family values blend in with the way we teach karate to our students.  As a responsible parent we teach our kids to respond to their ability which defines responsibility; to be respectful to yourself and others, to always tell the truth and be sincere in everything, to always do things right, put effort in what you do, and to have self-control. All these principles form the basis in all human beings which defines their character, a person’s essential qualities. That is the 5 basic principles in life, but also the 5 basic principles in karate. How awesome is that? You train your brain and get a full body conditioning session with it.

Although karate is a good overall body workout, there is also a lot of philosophy and precepts around it which forms the foundation of the art. The principles allude to notions of humility, respect, compassion, patience, and both an inward and outward calmness.

Many karate students excel in school as they stand out above the other kids with better concentration, focus capabilities, self-confidence and solving challenges. These qualities ensured better academic results, leadership, better friendships and of course a healthy lifestyle.

Solis Ortus strives to be the extension from home in a sporty environment. Many of our students excel not only in karate as a sport, but also on a personal level. Karate can be an additional sport towards a sport you are currently doing. Karate can be a family sport, it doesn’t matter how old you are. Karate can be a lifestyle or can be competitive….your choice. Karate takes time, but so does anything that is worthwhile. Karate is FUN, rewarding and challenging.

Many adults also start karate as a sport. It is an incredible stress reliever. It has unbelievable health benefits. Karate increases your flexibility, balance, hand-eye coordination and your natural strength without weights. Building strength without weights decrease the risk of injuries.  Karate uses principles of isometrics and plyometrics to increase natural strength and power. It prolongs your fitness levels. The long term health benefits of a proper karate program is immeasurable as it is not uncommon to see excellent karate students practicing well into their 70’s or even their 80’s! How is that for motivation?

Above being a Karateka/student, Solis Ortus rewards everyone by grading twice a year to achieve their higher belts and become the best karateka they can be. Karatekas are well mannered and have immaculate etiquette, and therefore excel in society.

You are invited to our open day to experience these principles first hand. Come and enjoy the morning with us….

2018 Yearend Function

“Nothing builds self-esteem and self-confidence like accomplishment.” (Thomas Carlyle)

With prize giving done and dusted, the holiday season begins. For some it means the amount of time left for working in 2018 is minimal. We find this to be a great time of reflection on the events of the year so far. For Solis Ortus, it has come with many accomplishments, surprises and the year turned out to be the highlight of our 40 year celebration. Happily, some of us experienced few disappointments but without disappointments there are no learning curve.

Prize giving at Solis Ortus is a big event. It is a prestigious event to acknowledge and recognise our karatekas for their accomplishments. Accomplishments in tournaments, but also for those who are doing karate for enjoyment and or lifestyle. What a year we have had at Solis Ortus.

To spice up our prize giving function, we invited two karatekas, who not only excel in karate, but also as “artists” outside karate. Our own drummer boy Wihan Vermeulen, who was recently awarded the highest mark in a Level 1 Rock school Exam for drumming in South Africa with 96 percent, had our audience clapping along to a Justin Timberlake song. This Red Belt drumming sensation (age 11) is set to take Pretoria by storm.

To uplift our evening, we also had a WX Street and Hip-Hop dancer. This talented lady is a 16 year old junior brown 1 belt, Roanne Koudstaal. kykNET presented an all styles dance competition, and Roannes’ dance group won best hip-hip dance group in South Africa. This event will also be broadcasted on kykNET January 2019. She also excelled as a karateka and have won JKA Nationals twice in kata and kumite.

Solis Ortus has more hidden talents and we would like to hear more from them.

2018 Delivered four Protea colour members; PW Pentz, Thirq du Preez, Hannelore Constable and Savannah Hauser. What an honour and accomplishment. Their achievements are an inspiration to other karatekas of the dojo and Solis Ortus cannot wait to see who will achieve their Protea colours next year.

This past year, we had 88 medallists who received a total of 299 medals in all tournaments participated. A total of 202 KSA and JKA colours were achieved. Solis Ortus is so proud of each and every one of you.

At prize giving we also acknowledged our karatekas whom do not compete in tournaments. Most of them were awarded with the 5 maxims of karate, perseverance, loyalty, good progress and best grader. Other floating trophies awarded were Best Kata, Best Kumite, Veteran of the Year and Karateka Male/Female of the Year.

Congratulations to all our karatekas who have been awarded. Thank you to all our children, juniors and seniors who make karate a blessing to teach. Thank you to your little smiles, your love and appreciation. Thank you for being part in building a rich karate history with Solis Ortus. Thank you to our parents who are always willing to turn up for classes, for your dedication and encouragement and of course your participation in all Solis Ortus events. Without you, we can never be such a successful club. Thank you…. thank you!

Solis Ortus also had to say goodbye to one of our beloved Instructors, Lilian Mynhardt. She taught our kids for the past 10 years and saw many of our kids becoming higher belts and black belts. Her contribution to Solis Ortus is unmeasurable and words cannot describe what she has done for the club, kids and parents. It was a sad moment for everyone. To give her appreciation of all her hard work, love, sweat and tears, the whole hall gave her a standing ovation. What a breath-taking moment. We salute you Lilian Mynhardt and wishing you all the success for your new journey.

Reflecting on the year that has been, it is a great way to access new experiences and hold onto learnings we have picked up.

“By taking the time to stop and appreciate who you are and what you’ve achieved—and perhaps learned through a few mistakes, stumbles and losses—you actually can enhance everything about you. Self-acknowledgment and appreciation are what give you the insights and awareness to move forward toward higher goals and accomplishments.”
—Jack Canfield

Now that we conclude 2018, Solis Ortus wishing you a fantastic festive season. If you are travelling, drive safely.

Until 2019!

Solis Ortus’ 80th Grading

Solis Ortus had their 80th Grading on Saturday, 1 December 2018.

Traditionally, Solis Ortus always starts with the Minis graders. Too cute for words they conquered the morning with loud kiai’s, precision and incredible spirit. The mini grading is always a good introduction to the rest of the days’ events. We adore the minis; each one equipped in their own right with the 5 maxims of karate. We are so proud of each and every one of you.

The rest of our grading day was per belt and age group succeeding to higher belts. The standard was high. Some students experienced grading for the first time. For them it was more intense and stressful. For our more experienced grading students, stress will always be a factor, but their experience pulled them through. Like they say, the harder you work the luckier you get. In this case the harder you have worked the easier it will be.

To all our 80th graders of Solis Ortus. Well done. Our panels in kata, kumite and kihon congratulate you all in a successful grading. You have grown so much as karatekas. Some of us improved a lot and others just excelled in their karate.

It is amazing to see how each karateka in their own character have excelled as a person. Some have shown more leadership, others improved in their school work or workplace, most of us learnt how to handle our stress levels and everybody showed the joy they experienced in their karate.

To our more senior group, not in belts, but in years…..well done. Grading is not for the weak. You all have conquered your fear and spread your wings to successfully graded to your next belt.

To our senior belts, not in age…what a fantastic grading. It is amazing to have seen you grow from white to where you are now. WELL DONE…FANTASTIC…keep up the standard! Sensei Eugene and the grading panel are extremely proud of you all.

Wear your belt with pride, frame your certificate, hang all your medals, but most of all be an ambassador wherever you may go. Keep on training, work hard and excel in life.

Well done to everyone, relax and we cannot wait to see you all at prize giving 7 December 2018.
